SermonNotes is free, your notes belong to you, and the friends feed has rules. Those are the three things that matter. The rest of this page is the detail behind them.

These terms are an agreement between you and [Peter Smith / your trading name] ("we", "us"), based in the United Kingdom. By downloading or using the SermonNotes app you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use the app.

1. What SermonNotes is

SermonNotes is an app for taking and keeping notes during church services, with Bible passages built in and an optional way to share notes with friends you choose. It is free to download and free to use, with no adverts and no paid features.

We may add, change, or remove features. If something you rely on is going away, we will try to give you notice and a way to get your notes out first.

2. Your account

You must be 13 or over to create an account. If you are under 16, ask a parent or guardian first.
Give us a real name and a working email address. Your display handle is yours to choose, but it must not impersonate somebody else.
Keep your sign-in details to yourself. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
One account per person.
You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Account → Delete Account. It takes effect immediately and it cannot be undone.

3. Your notes are yours

You own everything you write. We claim no ownership of your notes, your studies, your comments, or anything else you put into the app.

So that the app can work, you give us a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store your content, to move it between your devices, and — only where you have chosen to share something — to display it to the friends you shared it with. That licence exists to run the service and nothing else. It ends when you delete the content or your account.

We do not sell your notes, publish them, or use them to train AI models. See the Privacy Policy for the full picture.

4. Sharing, and the rules of the feed

Notes are private unless you mark them as shared. A shared note goes to the friends you have accepted inside the app — not to the public, and not to friends of friends.

Comments, Amens, devotion posts, and shared notes are content that other people see, so there are rules about them.

Zero tolerance for abusive content and abusive behaviour

You must not post, share, or send anything that is:

abusive, harassing, threatening, or intended to bully or intimidate;
hateful towards anyone on the grounds of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or age;
sexually explicit, or in any way sexualises a child;
violent, graphic, or encouraging of self-harm;
unlawful, defamatory, or in breach of somebody else's rights, including copying material you do not have the right to copy;
spam, advertising, a scam, or an attempt to obtain other people's personal details;
impersonating another person, a church, or an organisation.

You must also not try to break the app or the service — no reverse engineering, no automated scraping, no interfering with other people's accounts, and no attempt to get at data that is not yours.

Reporting, and what we do about it

Every shared note, devotion post, and comment can be reported, and every user can be blocked, from inside the app. Blocking is immediate and takes effect both ways.

We aim to review every report within 24 hours. Where content breaks these rules we will remove it, and where a person keeps breaking them we will suspend or delete their account without a refund — there is nothing to refund, as the app is free. We do not have to warn you first, and our decision is final.

5. Bible text belongs to its publishers

Bible passages in SermonNotes are supplied through the YouVersion Platform API and remain the property of their publishers. They are licensed to us for use inside this app; they are not ours to give away.

You may read, quote, and keep scripture inside your own notes as any reader would. You may not extract the Bible text from the app in bulk, republish it, or redistribute it.

Several translations are available and you choose which to use. Some are in the public domain; others are copyrighted and licensed to us — for example, quotations marked NIV or NIVUK are taken from the Holy Bible, New International Version® and the New International Version® (Anglicised), NIV®, used by permission of Biblica, Inc. Whichever you choose, that publisher's full copyright notice is shown in the app alongside the passage, taken from the publisher's own metadata, and it is that notice which governs.

6. The app is free, and provided as it is

SermonNotes is provided free of charge and "as is". We do our best to keep it working and your notes safe, but we cannot promise it will always be available, always error-free, or always able to reach the Bible text service or your notes when the internet is down.

Keep your own copy of anything you cannot bear to lose. That is true of every app, including this one.

7. Our liability

Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law. Your rights as a consumer under UK law are unaffected by anything here.

Subject to that, and because this app is supplied free of charge, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for loss of profit or of business, or for lost or corrupted data, however it arises.

8. Ending it

You can stop using SermonNotes at any time, and delete your account from within the app. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms, or if we stop running the service — in which case we will give you as much notice as we reasonably can.

9. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If a change is significant, the date at the top will change and the app will tell you. Carrying on using SermonNotes after that means you accept the new terms.

10. The App Store

These terms are between you and us, not between you and Apple. Apple is not responsible for SermonNotes or for supporting it, and any question or complaint about the app should come to us. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. You confirm you are not in a country subject to a US Government embargo and are not on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.

11. Law

These terms are governed by Scots law, and the courts of Scotland have jurisdiction. If you live elsewhere in the UK, you keep the protection of your own local consumer law.
